I was very pleased to have welcomed Opposition Leader Matthew Guy to the Mornington Peninsula last Friday to announce that a Liberal Nationals government will fund the feasibility study into Hinterland Environmental Water Scheme (HEWS).
This is a scheme I have been working on for the last few years and the first step is to get a full feasibility study funded.
The HEWS is a plan to divert up to 50 million litres per day of Class A water to farmers, water which is currently being discharged into Bass Strait between Gunnamatta and St Andrews Beach via the South Eastern Outfall.
In addition to farmers, this water can be used for fire fighting to help ensure our hinterland is kept safe over future fire seasons.
Our precious hinterland needs to be protected and preserved and if feasible, the HEWS will be one way to ensure that this land is secured for both farming and conservation for decades to come.
